Who is a young carer?
A young carer is someone, usually aged 16-25 but sometimes even younger, who looks after a sick parent, a friend or brothers and sisters.
What are the main duties for a young carer?
- Cooking, housework and shopping
- Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed
- Emotional support, such as talking or listening to someone
- Personal care, such as helping someone dress or go to the toilet
- Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions
- Helping to give someone their medication
When you care for someone with those duties for the most of your time, then you can be recognized as a young carer and you may be entitled for some support by the social services.
How do you feel when you are a young carer?
When the issue is drugs or alcohol addiction or a mental sickness such as depression, to be a young carer may be even harder because you feel frustrated or powerless. Sometimes you can feel even abused by the parent you look after. Sometimes you feel with no control of your own life. You are feeling that you don’t have any other choice, you feel isolated because you don’t have the same life of your friends and you don’t any chances to meet them.
It looks an endless cycle with no ways out. But you need to bear well in your mind that it’s not you fault and you cannot rescue your parent or fix the problem on your own.
